Baja California

Baja Norte – You might have heard of Tijuana, I haven’t visited it , so I can’t say much, but it is is an interesting city where the US and Mexican culture meet. I wouldn’t stay long and is not as dangerous as people say. But it is easy to get there as the airport is well connected and it is in the border with San Diego. Most likely you will start your trip there and ideally rent a car or get in tour to explore the rest of the state.

Perhaps the best area to explore is around Ensenada an area called Valle de Guadalupe, where you will find a lot of vineyards that offer wine tasting, accommodation and great food. You can also explore the coastal towns where you will find fresh seafood in very relaxed environments

Heading further south you can explore Cave prehistoric paintings , they are a bit remote, but worth visiting. Here is a website with some information. If you head into the Golf of Cortes, you will find small towns with beautiful beaches worth exploring a few of them.

Baja Itinerary

Here is the itinerary that I suggest

Day 1- Tijuana and Ensenada

  • Land in Tijuana and hire a car. I would go straight to Ensenada
  • Spend a night in Ensenada, try it to be Thursday-Saturday so that most restaurants are open
  • You can spend a night in Valle de Gudalupe instead, but I think is best leaving it till the end of your trip
  • There are many good seafood restaurants worth trying
    • Manzanilla
    • El Patio
    • La Guerrerense (La Carreta y Sabina)

Day 2- Trip to San Felipe

Day 3 – San Felipe

  • If you missed the Salinas, head there
  • Go to the Valley of the Giants (Valle de los gigantes) to see huge cactus
    • Head south on road 5 (the only road) for about 23 km form San Felice city centre, there is a small dirt track and you will find a man in a gate that will charge you some pesos to get in, you then drive for 5 minutes to get to the site
  • Head to the beach, either in town or there are some isolated beaches in the south
